Overview

Quaternized chitosan (QCS) is a chemically modified derivative of chitosan, a natural polysaccharide derived from chitin. This modification enhances its solubility, introduces a positive charge, and often improves its inherent antibacterial properties. QCS is widely utilized as a foundational component in the development of various biomaterials, including hydrogels, nanocomposites, and wound dressings. These materials are being investigated for a broad range of biomedical applications, such as promoting wound healing in conditions like diabetic foot ulcers, oral mucosal injuries, and postoperative pancreatic fistulas, as well as for targeted drug delivery systems. Its therapeutic effects are primarily mediated through its ability to form biocompatible scaffolds, exert direct antibacterial action, modulate inflammatory responses, and stimulate tissue regeneration and angiogenesis.
