Overview
Qudexy XR is an extended-release oral capsule formulation of topiramate, a sulfamate-substituted monosaccharide antiepileptic drug. It is indicated as initial monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial-onset seizures and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients 2 years and older, as well as adjunctive therapy for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Additionally, it is approved for the prophylaxis of migraine headache in patients 12 years and older. The precise mechanisms by which topiramate exerts its anticonvulsant and preventive migraine effects are not fully understood; however, preclinical studies suggest that it blocks voltage-dependent sodium channels, augments the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at some subtypes of GABA-A receptors, antagonizes AMPA/kainate subtype glutamate receptors, and inhibits carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes[1][2][4][6][7][9].
