Quercetin-3-docosahexaenoic acid is a synthetic lipophenol hybrid molecule consisting of the flavonoid quercetin esterified with the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at the C-3 position. It is designed as a dual-action pharmacological entity to combat both oxidative stress and carbonyl stress (anti-COS), which are critical pathological mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. By combining the antioxidant properties of quercetin with the neuroprotective effects of DHA, the molecule aims to protect neuronal cells from the toxicity of reactive aldehydes, such as acrolein. The lipophilic nature of the DHA moiety is intended to improve the cellular uptake and bioavailability of the quercetin scaffold compared to the parent polyphenol.
