Quercetin-3-docosahexaenoic acid-7-isopropyl is a synthetic polyunsaturated alkylated lipophenol designed as a hybrid molecule for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease. It is a single pharmacological entity that covalently combines the antioxidant and anti-carbonyl stress properties of the flavonoid quercetin with the anti-inflammatory benefits of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), further modified with an isopropyl group at the 7-position to enhance lipophilicity or stability. The molecule acts by scavenging toxic small aldehydes like acrolein and reducing oxidative stress, thereby protecting neuronal cells from carbonyl stress-induced apoptosis. Research indicates that this hybrid structure may offer superior neuroprotective effects compared to its individual components by addressing multiple detrimental mechanisms involved in neuronal cell loss.
