Overview

Quercetin-modified sulfur nanoparticles (Qc@SNPs) are an experimental nanotherapeutic system designed for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease. The system consists of sulfur nanoparticles functionalized with quercetin, a flavonoid known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To facilitate delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), these nanoparticles are often encapsulated within microbubbles (Qc@SNPs-MB) and administered in conjunction with focused ultrasound to induce transient sonoporation of the BBB. Once released into the brain parenchyma, Qc@SNPs mitigate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, thereby reducing neuronal apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress while restoring calcium homeostasis. Preclinical studies in mouse models have demonstrated that this treatment significantly improves cognitive function and memory without observable side effects.
