Overview

Quercus dumosa pollen extract is a biological allergenic product derived from the California scrub oak, primarily used for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. In clinical practice, it serves a dual role: as a diagnostic agent for epicutaneous or intradermal skin testing to identify IgE-mediated sensitivity, and as a therapeutic agent in allergen immunotherapy (AIT). When used for immunotherapy, the extract is administered in escalating doses to induce immunological tolerance. The mechanism of action involves modulating the immune system to shift from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) mediated response. This shift is characterized by the induction of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies, which compete with IgE for allergen binding, and the suppression of mast cell and basophil activation, thereby reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and seasonal asthma.
