Quercus palustris pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the pin oak tree (*Quercus palustris*). It is utilized primarily as a diagnostic tool in clinical allergy testing, such as skin prick or intradermal testing, to identify individuals with Type I hypersensitivity to oak pollen. The extract contains various allergenic proteins that, when introduced to a sensitized patient, cross-link specific IgE antibodies bound to mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a characteristic wheal-and-flare reaction. While its primary use is diagnostic, similar extracts are also employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) to desensitize patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma.
