Overview

Quercus virginiana pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Virginia Live Oak tree (Quercus virginiana). [5] Marketed under the brand name 'Virginia Live Oak Pollen' and manufactured by Greer Laboratories, Inc., it is an FDA-approved biologic product used for both diagnosis and treatment of individuals with immediate hypersensitivity allergies to this specific pollen. The diagnostic application involves skin testing to confirm sensitivity. The therapeutic use consists of allergen immunotherapy, where the extract is administered via intradermal, percutaneous, or subcutaneous injection. This process aims to modulate the patient's immune system to build tolerance to the allergen, involving mechanisms such as the induction of cell-mediated immunity and an increase in allergen-specific IgG antibodies, which can block the allergic reaction. [1] The product was first approved by the FDA in 1941.
