Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Quest 2 is a brand of reduced-nicotine cigarettes containing approximately 0.3 mg of nicotine, which is significantly lower than the nicotine content found in standard commercial cigarettes. Developed by the Liggett Group (a subsidiary of Vector Group) using genetically modified tobacco, Quest 2 was marketed as the second stage of a three-step nicotine reduction program designed to help smokers gradually reduce their nicotine intake. In clinical research sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), these cigarettes are utilized to study the effects of very low nicotine content (VLNC) on smoking behavior, compensatory smoking, and tobacco dependence. The primary therapeutic goal in a research context is to decouple the sensorimotor cues of smoking from high levels of nicotine delivery, thereby reducing the reinforcing effects of tobacco and facilitating smoking cessation.
