Overview
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (including both manic and depressive episodes), and as an adjunct in major depressive disorder. It works by modulating the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain—mainly through antagonism of serotonin (5-HT2A) and dopamine (D2) receptors—which helps balance mood and thought processes. Quetiapine was developed in 1985 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1997. It is available as a generic medication and is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[1][4][5].
