Overview
Quetiapine extended release (marketed as Seroquel XR) is an atypical antipsychotic of the dibenzothiazepine class. It acts as an antagonist at multiple neurotransmitter receptors, including serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2, dopamine D1 and D2, histamine H1, and adrenergic alpha-1 and alpha-2 receptors. Developed by AstraZeneca, the extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, providing a more stable plasma concentration compared to the immediate-release version. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (including manic, mixed, or depressive episodes), and as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder. Additionally, it has been investigated for off-label indications such as alcohol dependence.
