Overview

Queuine is a hyper-modified nucleobase derived from 7-deazaguanine and classified as a pyrrolopyrimidine. It is not synthesized by humans or other eukaryotes but is exclusively produced by bacteria; higher organisms acquire it through diet or gut microbiota. Queuine is salvaged and incorporated into the wobble position (anticodon position 34) of certain tRNAs (for aspartic acid, asparagine, histidine, and tyrosine), where it is converted to the nucleoside queuosine. This modification plays an essential role in normal cellular function and development by supporting the generation of key biochemicals such as tyrosine, serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, nitric oxide, and lipids[1][2][8]. Research suggests that queuine may act as a "putative longevity vitamin" with potential age-delaying effects due to its involvement in maintaining these biochemical pathways[1]. Additionally, exogenous administration of queuine has been shown to promote antioxidant defense systems by increasing activities of enzymes like catalase and superoxide dismutase—potentially inhibiting oxidative stress and tumorigenesis[6].
