Overview
Qufeng Huoxue is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by researchers at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, specifically for the management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in patients with lung cancer. The formula is designed to "expel wind" (Qufeng) and "activate blood" (Huoxue), addressing the TCM pathogenesis of CIPN, which involves Qi deficiency and blood stasis. Clinical studies conducted at Zhongshan Hospital suggest that Qufeng Huoxue can significantly alleviate symptoms such as numbness, pain, and temperature sensitivity in the extremities of patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy, such as platinum-based agents or taxanes. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to its ability to improve local blood flow, reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6, and enhance the expression of neurotrophic factors such as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), thereby protecting peripheral nerves from oxidative damage and promoting axonal repair.
