Drug intelligence / Profile preview
QuikClot Sport is a topical hemostatic medical device developed by Z-Medica (now a subsidiary of Teleflex) for the temporary control of moderate to severe external bleeding. The product features a non-woven sponge impregnated with kaolin, an inorganic mineral that initiates the intrinsic pathway of the coagulation cascade by activating Factor XII (Hageman factor). This process rapidly accelerates the formation of a stable fibrin clot at the site of injury. Additionally, the Sport formulation contains ionic silver, which provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, making it suitable for use in emergency or outdoor settings where immediate definitive medical care is unavailable.
