QuikClot Sport Silver is a hemostatic medical device developed by Z-Medica Corporation (now a subsidiary of Teleflex) for the rapid control of moderate to severe external hemorrhage. The product consists of a porous mesh bag containing beads of the mineral zeolite, which acts as a molecular sieve to rapidly absorb water from the blood. This dehydration process concentrates platelets and endogenous coagulation factors at the wound site, significantly accelerating the natural clotting cascade to form a stable clot, typically in under five minutes. This specific 'Silver' formulation incorporates ionic silver, which provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antifungal properties to prevent infection in contaminated wounds or when immediate medical care is unavailable. While widely utilized by emergency responders and military personnel, zeolite-based QuikClot products have largely been superseded in professional settings by kaolin-based formulations to eliminate the exothermic reaction associated with zeolite hydration.
