Overview

Quilizumab is a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody developed for the treatment of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic urticaria. It specifically targets the M1-prime segment of membrane-bound immunoglobulin E (IgE), which is present on IgE-switched B cells and memory B cells but not on soluble IgE in serum. By binding to this segment, quilizumab depletes these B cell populations through apoptosis and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, leading to reduced production of soluble IgE and dampening the effector cell response to allergens. Quilizumab was developed by Genentech and reached phase 2 clinical trials for several allergic conditions before development was discontinued[2][3][4][7].
