Overview

Quimi-Hib is a synthetic conjugate vaccine designed to prevent invasive diseases caused by *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib), such as meningitis, pneumonia, and epiglottitis. It is historically significant as the first human vaccine produced using a chemically synthesized carbohydrate antigen rather than one purified from bacterial cultures. The vaccine consists of a synthetic polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) oligosaccharide conjugated to a tetanus toxoid carrier protein. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide into a T-cell dependent antigen, which induces a robust immune response and immunological memory, particularly in infants. Developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba in collaboration with the University of Havana, it is distributed in Vietnam by Dalat Pasteur Vaccines (DAVAC).
