Drug intelligence / Profile preview
QUIMI-VIO is a heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) developed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute in Cuba. It is designed to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. The vaccine targets seven specific serotypes (1, 5, 6B, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F) and has demonstrated cross-protection against serotypes 6A and 19A. It utilizes a conjugation technology where purified capsular polysaccharides from the bacteria are linked to a tetanus toxoid carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity, particularly in infants and young children. The vaccine has undergone extensive clinical testing in Cuba and has been implemented in sanitary interventions to reduce the burden of pneumococcal disease in the pediatric population.
