quinagolide

Quinagolide is a non-ergot-derived, selective dopamine D2 receptor agonist used primarily for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia (elevated prolactin levels). Hyperprolactinemia can cause gonadal dysfunction, infertility, reduced libido, and long-term complications such as osteoporosis. Quinagolide acts by selectively binding to dopamine D2 receptors on lactotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland, inhibiting adenylyl cyclase activity and reducing intracellular cAMP levels. This results in potent suppression of both basal and stimulated prolactin secretion. It is marketed as oral tablets under the brand name Norprolac and is available in several countries including Canada and the UK but not approved for use in the United States[1][2][4][7]. Quinagolide has also been found effective for treating breast pain[7].
