Quinalizarin is a tetrahydroxyanthraquinone compound with the chemical formula C14H8O6 and molecular weight of approximately 272.21 g/mol[3][6][10]. It is known for its deep red to purple color and is used as a dye and pigment in various applications[10]. In pharmacology and biomedical research, quinalizarin acts as a potent and selective inhibitor of protein kinase CK2 (casein kinase II), affecting cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis in cancer cells[4][9]. It has demonstrated anticancer activity by inducing apoptosis through modulation of signaling pathways such as MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase), STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), Akt (protein kinase B), and p53[4][5][9]. Additionally, quinalizarin exhibits antifungal properties against Candida albicans by inhibiting hyphal growth and biofilm formation via mechanisms involving reactive oxygen species generation and mitochondrial membrane potential disruption[1][5].
