Overview

Quinbolone is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS), developed as an orally active derivative of boldenone. It was designed to provide anabolic effects with reduced liver toxicity compared to traditional oral steroids by avoiding 17α-alkylation; instead, it features a cyclopentenyl ether group that increases oral bioavailability. After ingestion, quinbolone itself is relatively inactive and is converted in the body to boldenone, which then exerts its effects primarily through activation of the androgen receptor. Quinbolone has weak intrinsic androgenic activity; most of its physiological actions are due to this conversion. The drug was originally marketed in Italy under brand names such as Anabolicum and Anabolvis but was not commercially successful due to the high doses required for efficacy and availability of more effective alternatives. Its use has been discontinued for medical purposes but it remains banned in sports due to potential misuse for performance enhancement[2][3][5][7].
