Overview

Quinine + doxycycline is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria, especially in cases caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Quinine is a cinchona alkaloid that acts as a blood schizonticide, interfering with the parasite's ability to digest hemoglobin within red blood cells. Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible organisms and also has antimalarial activity by inhibiting apicoplast function in Plasmodium species. This combination is recommended because quinine provides rapid reduction of parasitemia while doxycycline prevents recrudescence and improves cure rates. The regimen is not recommended for children under 8 years or pregnant women due to potential adverse effects from doxycycline[1][4][5][6].
