Overview

Quinisocaine (also known as dimethisoquin) is a topical local anesthetic primarily used as an antipruritic agent to relieve itching and minor skin irritations. It belongs to the class of amino amide anesthetics and acts by blocking nerve conduction when applied locally. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of voltage-dependent sodium channels in nerve tissue, resulting in reversible sensory and motor paralysis in the area of application. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (notably α4β4 and α4β2 subtypes), which may contribute to its pharmacological effects[1][3][5]. Quinisocaine is classified under ATC code D04AB05 for dermatological use as an antipruritic and topical anesthetic.
