Overview

Quinpirole is a psychoactive drug and research chemical that acts as a potent, selective agonist of dopamine D2 and D3 receptors. It is primarily used in scientific and laboratory research, particularly in models studying dopaminergic signaling, movement, compulsive behaviors, and neuroprotection. Quinpirole exhibits high affinity for the dopamine D2 receptor (Ki ≈ 4.8 nM) and moderate affinity for D3 (Ki ≈ 24 nM); it displays much lower activity at D4 and negligible activity at D1 receptors. Mechanistically, it activates dopamine D2-like receptors, reducing neuronal excitability and modulating neurotransmitter release. Quinpirole is commonly used to induce or modulate behaviors in animal models relevant to obsessive-compulsive disorder, addiction, Parkinson's disease, and sleep regulation. It is not used therapeutically in humans.
