Overview

Quinupramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) that has been approved in France and some other European countries for the treatment of depression. It is structurally related to other TCAs but features a unique bicyclic side chain (quinuclidine moiety). Like other TCAs, its mechanism of action involves inhibition of the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, increasing their levels in the synaptic cleft and thereby enhancing neurotransmission. This pharmacological activity underlies its antidepressant effects. Quinupramine may also interact with muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, histamine H1 receptors, and alpha1 adrenergic receptors, contributing to its side effect profile[6][8][10].
