quinupristin

Quinupristin is a semisynthetic antibiotic of the streptogramin B class, derived from pristinamycin I. It is primarily used in combination with dalfopristin (a streptogramin A antibiotic) to form the fixed-ratio product Synercid, which is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and complicated skin and skin structure infections due to susceptible Staphylococcus aureus. Quinupristin acts by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis at a late stage (peptide chain elongation). When combined with dalfopristin, which inhibits an earlier phase of protein synthesis, their actions are synergistic and result in enhanced bactericidal activity against susceptible bacteria[2][5][10].
