Overview

R-MDEA is the (R)-enantiomer of 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-ethylamphetamine (MDEA), a psychoactive compound belonging to the entactogen class. It is currently being investigated as a potential therapeutic for neuropsychiatric conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety. Unlike the racemic mixture (known as "Eve") or the (S)-enantiomer, R-MDEA exhibits a pharmacological profile characterized by reduced stimulant activity and a more selective, albeit less potent, action on serotonin release. This profile is hypothesized to provide the pro-social and empathogenic benefits associated with entactogens while maintaining a wider safety margin, particularly regarding cardiovascular and thermoregulatory side effects. R-MDEA acts primarily as a substrate-mediated monoamine releasing agent, interacting with the serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine transporters, as well as the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2).
