Overview

R118 is a preclinical small molecule drug candidate developed by Rigel Pharmaceuticals as an AMPK activator. It has been evaluated for its potential to increase muscle endurance and improve symptoms in patients with intermittent claudication, a condition associated with peripheral artery disease. Preclinical studies have shown that R118 acts as a central regulator of lipid and metabolic activity, which may help address the underlying metabolic dysfunction in affected muscles[5]. Rigel planned to initiate a Phase 1 trial of R118 in patients with intermittent claudication in the first half of 2014[5].
