Overview

R78C is an experimental, protein subunit vaccine candidate targeting the blood stage of *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria. It is based on two parasite proteins, PfCyRPA and PfRIPR, which are essential for the parasite’s invasion of human erythrocytes. These proteins form a complex with PfRH5, another leading vaccine target, and the combination is critical for the parasite’s ability to enter red blood cells. R78C, when administered in combination with a PfRH5-based vaccine, has shown superior performance in preclinical models compared to RH5 alone, leading to higher overall levels of functional, antigen-specific antibodies and improved growth inhibition of the parasite. The vaccine is formulated with the Matrix-M adjuvant and is being developed by the University of Oxford, with ReciBioPharm involved in clinical manufacture. Its primary intended use is for the prevention of *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria, and it has been evaluated in adult clinical trials in the UK and is entering trials in Africa[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
