Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DWRX1004 is an oral, immediate-release fixed-dose combination of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) rabeprazole sodium and the antacid sodium bicarbonate, originally developed by Daewoong Therapeutics. Traditional PPIs are highly unstable in acidic environments and typically require enteric coatings, which delays their absorption and therapeutic onset. By co-formulating rabeprazole with sodium bicarbonate, the antacid rapidly neutralizes gastric acid in the stomach, protecting the PPI from degradation and allowing it to be absorbed quickly in the upper gastrointestinal tract. This formulation achieves rapid drug absorption and symptom relief, with an onset of action of approximately 30 minutes compared to 2–3 hours for conventional enteric-coated rabeprazole formulations. The formulation technology was licensed to Yungjin Pharm, which co-developed and manufactured the drug for several commercial partners in South Korea. It was approved in South Korea in December 2021 and launched in March 2022 for the treatment of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
