Overview

RabiCide-I (marketed as Rabishield) is a recombinant human monoclonal antibody (mAb) developed for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). It was developed by the Serum Institute of India in collaboration with MassBiologics of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The product contains the monoclonal antibody 17C7, which specifically targets and neutralizes the rabies virus glycoprotein (G protein) by binding to a highly conserved epitope (Site III). This action prevents the virus from attaching to and entering host nerve cells, thereby halting the progression of the infection. RabiCide-I serves as a modern, scalable alternative to traditional human rabies immune globulin (hRIG) and equine rabies immune globulin (eRIG), offering higher purity, consistency, and a reduced risk of adverse reactions or pathogen transmission. It is typically administered via local infiltration at the site of the bite and intramuscular injection, in conjunction with a course of rabies vaccination to provide immediate passive immunity.
