Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rabies antiserum, also known as equine rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG), is a sterile preparation of purified and concentrated immunoglobulin fragments (predominantly F(ab')2) obtained from the plasma of healthy horses immunized against the rabies virus. It is indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of rabies in individuals who have sustained Category III exposures (such as deep bites or scratches) from potentially rabid animals. Rabies antiserum provides immediate passive immunity by locally neutralizing the rabies virus at the site of exposure before it can invade the central nervous system. It is administered via local infiltration in and around the wound, with any remaining volume given intramuscularly, and must be used in conjunction with a full course of active rabies vaccination.
