Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rabies immunoglobulin is a sterile solution of neutralizing antibodies (immunoglobulins) obtained from the plasma of hyperimmunized human donors (human rabies immunoglobulin, HRIG) or equines (equine rabies immunoglobulin, ERIG). It is indicated for passive, immediate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in individuals suspected of exposure to the rabies virus, such as through animal bites or scratches. Rabies immunoglobulin acts by physically binding to and neutralizing the rabies virus at the site of entry, preventing it from accessing the central nervous system. It is always administered in combination with a rabies vaccine to bridge the gap before active immunity is established. Biolik Pharma (formerly Farmstandart-Biolik) is a key manufacturer of a highly purified equine-derived formulation.
