Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Butantan Foundation's rabies vaccine is an inactivated viral vaccine produced in Vero cell cultures. It is indicated for both pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis against rabies, a fatal zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus (Lyssavirus). The vaccine contains inactivated rabies virus (typically the Pasteur Virus strain), which, upon administration, induces the production of neutralizing antibodies specifically targeting the viral glycoprotein (G protein). These antibodies prevent the virus from attaching to and entering host cells, particularly neurons, thereby halting the progression of the infection to the central nervous system. It is a critical tool in public health programs for managing animal bites and high-risk occupational exposures.
