Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VaxiRab N is a purified chick embryo cell culture (PCEC) rabies vaccine developed and manufactured by Zydus Lifesciences. It is an inactivated biological vaccine containing the Pitman-Moore strain of the rabies virus, with a potency of at least 2.5 IU per dose. The vaccine is provided as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder that must be reconstituted with sterile water for injection before administration. VaxiRab N received WHO prequalification in February 2019, making it eligible for global procurement by UN agencies. It is indicated for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in high-risk individuals and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following potential rabies exposure. The vaccine can be administered via intramuscular or intradermal routes and works by inducing active immunization, stimulating the production of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA) above the protective threshold of 0.5 IU/mL.
