Abhayrab is a purified, inactivated rabies vaccine (PVRV) developed by Indian Immunologicals Ltd. (IIL). It is produced using the L. Pasteur 2061 strain of the rabies virus, which is propagated in Vero cells and subsequently inactivated with β-propiolactone. The vaccine is lyophilized and contains Thiomersal as a preservative. It is indicated for both pre-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk individuals (such as veterinarians and laboratory workers) and post-exposure treatment following potential rabies virus exposure. Administration is typically performed via intramuscular or intradermal injection, with dosing schedules varying based on the clinical context. Common side effects include injection site reactions, joint pain, and lymph node swelling, while rare systemic reactions like high fever or anaphylaxis may occur.
