Rabies vaccine (Vero cells) is an inactivated viral vaccine produced by propagating rabies virus strains, such as the Pitman-Moore (PM) strain, in Vero cell cultures (a continuous lineage of kidney epithelial cells from the African green monkey). This technology allows for large-scale production of high-purity vaccines compared to older nerve-tissue or primary cell culture methods. The vaccine is typically inactivated using beta-propiolactone and then purified and lyophilized to ensure stability. It is used for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in high-risk individuals and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following potential rabies exposure. The vaccine is highly immunogenic, inducing protective levels of neutralizing antibodies against the rabies virus G protein. It is widely used globally and is a cornerstone of rabies prevention programs in China and other endemic regions.
