Overview

Rabies vaccine purified chick embryo cell (PCECV) is an inactivated viral vaccine used for the prevention of rabies in humans. It is produced by propagating the rabies virus (typically the Flury-LEP or Pittman Moore strain) in primary chick embryo fibroblast cell cultures. The harvested virus is inactivated using beta-propiolactone and subsequently purified and concentrated through zonal centrifugation. PCECV is indicated for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in individuals at high risk of rabies exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following contact with a potentially rabid animal. It is administered via intramuscular or intradermal injection and works by inducing the production of virus-neutralizing antibodies. Major brands include RabAvert and Rabipur, which are currently owned by Bavarian Nordic.
