Overview

The rabies virus (inactivated) strain Flury LEP is a vaccine candidate developed by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp) for the prevention of rabies. The Flury strain was originally isolated from a human patient and subsequently attenuated through serial passages in embryonated chicken eggs; the "Low Egg Passage" (LEP) designation refers to the virus being passaged approximately 40-50 times. While live-attenuated Flury LEP strains are commonly employed in veterinary medicine (particularly for dogs), this specific preparation is chemically inactivated to provide a safer profile for human prophylaxis. The vaccine works by introducing inactivated viral particles to the immune system, primarily targeting the rabies virus glycoprotein to stimulate the production of virus-neutralizing antibodies (VNA). This development was part of efforts to create high-quality, cell-culture-based vaccines that could serve as more accessible alternatives to older nerve-tissue-derived vaccines in endemic regions.
