Overview

Racephedrine is the racemic form of ephedrine—a sympathomimetic amine and bronchodilator. It consists of equal parts of the two enantiomers of ephedrine ((1R,2S) and (1S,2R)). Racephedrine has been used as a bronchodilator to treat asthma and other conditions involving bronchospasm. Its mechanism involves acting as a norepinephrine releasing agent and weak dopamine releasing agent; both enantiomers are active but the natural l-ephedrine is more potent. Like other sympathomimetics in its class it stimulates adrenergic receptors directly and indirectly by increasing synaptic norepinephrine levels[5][6]. Racephedrine has been marketed for medical use in Italy under brand names such as Efetonina and Ephoxamine[5].
