Overview

Ractopamine is a synthetic phenethanolamine and β-adrenergic agonist used as a feed additive in livestock to promote leanness and improve feed conversion efficiency. It is primarily administered to swine (as Paylean), cattle (as Optaflexx), and turkeys (as Topmax) during the final weeks before slaughter. Ractopamine acts as an agonist at β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors as well as trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1), leading to increased protein synthesis in muscle tissue, reduced fat deposition, and enhanced muscle growth. Developed by Elanco Animal Health (formerly part of Eli Lilly and Company), it is approved for use in several countries but banned or restricted in many others due to safety concerns[1][2][5][7].
