Overview

Radachlorin is a **second-generation photosensitizer** composed of a mixture of sodium salts of **chlorin e6** (major component, 70–95%), **chlorin p6** (5–20%), and **purpurin 5** (2–15%) in aqueous solution[2][4][7]. It is used in **photodynamic therapy (PDT)**, primarily for the treatment of malignant tumors such as basal cell carcinoma and other cancers[3][4][8]. Upon irradiation with red light (typically 662–664 nm), Radachlorin is activated to produce **reactive oxygen species (ROS)** that destroy targeted tumor cells[2][6][4][8]. It has high tumor selectivity, rapid clearance from healthy tissues, and a favorable safety profile—resulting in minimal skin sensitivity post-treatment[3][6]. Radachlorin was introduced in Russia and received marketing authorization there in 2009 and conditional approval in South Korea in 2008[3]. It is under development and clinical trial assessment in other regions, including the EU[3].
