Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Radicava IV (edaravone) is an intravenous formulation of a small molecule neuroprotective agent indicated for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Developed by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma and later acquired by Shionogi, edaravone is a substituted 2-pyrazolin-5-one that acts as a potent free radical scavenger and antioxidant. It is designed to mitigate oxidative stress, a key factor implicated in the degeneration and death of motor neurons in ALS patients. The drug was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2017. In October 2024, the manufacturer announced the strategic decision to discontinue the IV formulation in the U.S. market following the approval and adoption of the oral suspension formulation, Radicava ORS.
