Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Radix Aucklandiae is the dried root of Aucklandia lappa Decne., commonly known as Mu Xiang in Chinese medicine. It has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine for promoting the movement of Qi (vital energy), alleviating pain, and treating various gastrointestinal disorders such as indigestion, abdominal fullness, bloating, diarrhea, and dysentery. The herb contains bioactive sesquiterpenes like costunolide and dehydrocostus lactone that contribute to its pharmacological effects. Modern research supports its anti-inflammatory properties—particularly through inhibition of NF-κB signaling—and demonstrates efficacy in reducing chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis by protecting intestinal epithelial cells and suppressing proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α). Radix Aucklandiae also exhibits antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic bacteria and fungi. In addition to digestive health benefits (including protection against gastric ulcers), it is used for pain relief associated with Qi stagnation throughout the body[1][2][3][4][5][7].
