Overview

Radix curcumae is the dried tuberous root (radix) from several species in the genus Curcuma—primarily Curcuma wenyujin, Curcuma longa, Curcuma kwangsiensis, and Curcuma phaeocaulis. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is known as Yujin and has been used for over a thousand years. Its main traditional uses include activating blood circulation and relieving pain; promoting qi movement and alleviating depression; clearing the heart and cooling blood; promoting gallbladder function; removing jaundice; treating syndromes such as qi stagnation and blood stasis (which can manifest as hematemesis or subcutaneous bleeding), heat disease with unconsciousness, epilepsy due to internal phlegm stagnation, dysmenorrhea caused by damp-heat in liver/gallbladder or cholelithiasis. Modern pharmacological studies have identified more than 250 compounds in radix curcumae—mainly terpenoids (such as germacrone) and curcuminoids (including curcumolide and curdione). The herb exhibits anti-tumor activity by inhibiting tumor cell proliferation via compounds like β-elemene and curcumol. It also demonstrates hepatoprotective effects through antioxidant mechanisms attributed to constituents like curcumins. Other activities include anti-inflammatory action via inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathways (reducing cytokines such as TNF-α/IL-6/IL-1β), analgesic effects through modulation of pain mediators including β-endorphin/5-hydroxytryptamine/c-fos expression in animal models, antithrombotic activity by reducing platelet aggregation/blood viscosity/increasing circulation (curdione/curcumol), antidepressant effects likely related to regulation of neurotransmitters or neurotrophic factors. Radix curcumae is widely used both medicinally—in TCM formulas for tumors/hepatitis/stroke/breast hyperplasia—and as a food additive/spice globally[1][2][3][4][5][6].
