Overview

Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae, known in Chinese as Qinjiao, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the dried roots and rhizomes of several species in the *Gentiana* genus, primarily *Gentiana macrophylla* Pall., *Gentiana straminea* Maxim., *Gentiana crassicaulis* Duthie ex Burk., and *Gentiana daurica* Fisch. It has been used for centuries to treat "wind-damp" conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, stroke, and facial paralysis. The primary bioactive constituents are secoiridoid glycosides (such as gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, sweroside, and loganic acid) and triterpenoids (like roburic acid). Pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects, often mediated through the inhibition of NF-κB signaling and modulation of central nervous system receptors like GABA and 5-HT1A.
