Overview

Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata is the processed form of the dried roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, G. glabra, or G. inflata, commonly known as Chinese licorice. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is called "Zhi Gan Cao" and is prepared by stir-baking with honey to enhance its tonifying and harmonizing properties[3][4][5][7]. The main bioactive constituents are triterpene saponins (notably glycyrrhizin) and flavonoids[6][8]. Pharmacological activities include anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-allergic, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective effects; it also moderates spasms, alleviates pain, eliminates phlegm, relieves coughs, clears toxins and harmonizes other herbs in TCM formulas[1][4][5][6]. It has been used for conditions such as sore throat, skin infections, food/drug intoxication, peptic ulcers and various inflammatory disorders[2][4].
