Radix Pseudostellariae is the dried tuberous root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm., a plant in the Caryophyllaceae family. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used as a tonic to strengthen qi (vital energy), nourish yin, and improve digestive and respiratory functions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is considered milder than Panax ginseng and often called "kid ginseng" or "child ginseng." The main active components include polysaccharides (notably PRP—Pseudostellariae Radix Polysaccharide), saponins such as astragalosides, flavonoids like calycosin and 3'-hydroxyformononetin, cyclic peptides such as heterophyllin A and B, organic acids, amino acids (alanine, lysine), carbohydrates (sucrose), fatty acids (linolenic acid), and other metabolites[1][5][6][7]. Pharmacological studies indicate immunomodulatory effects—especially via modulation of T lymphocyte function—anti-fatigue activity through neuroendocrine regulation[2], cardiotonic effects on failing hearts[1], vasodilation with potential antihypertensive action[1], sedative properties in animal models[1], anti-inflammatory activity in lung tissue[4], enhancement of resistance to disease by restoring immune balance[4], improvement of lung function for conditions related to lung-qi deficiency such as fatigue or shortness of breath[4]. It is generally administered orally as decoction pieces or granules.
