Overview

Radix rehmanniae praeparata is the processed (steamed) root of Rehmannia glutinosa, a perennial herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Known as Shu Di Huang in Chinese medicine, it is considered a key blood tonic and is traditionally used to nourish kidney-yin and replenish essence and marrow. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as anemia, menstrual disorders, symptoms of yin deficiency (like hot flushes or night sweats), and to promote healthy blood circulation. Pharmacologically, radix rehmanniae praeparata contains active compounds such as catalpol that exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective properties and may modulate immune function. Some studies suggest it can reduce neuronal apoptosis and improve energy metabolism in animal models. However, robust clinical evidence for its efficacy remains limited[1][2][3][4][6].
