Overview

Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, commonly known as Shu Di Huang, is the processed (usually steamed and dried) tuber of Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) Libosch. ex Fisch. & C.A. Mey. It is a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), valued for its "yin-enriching" and "blood-tonifying" properties. Pharmacologically, it contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides (RRPP), iridoid glycosides like catalpol, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and various sugars like mannotriose. Research indicates it possesses significant anti-inflammatory, anti-osteoporotic, and neuroprotective activities. It is used to treat osteoarthritis by modulating chondrocyte glucose metabolism, osteoporosis by improving bone mineral density and bone metabolism markers, and asthma by inhibiting airway remodeling and eosinophil infiltration. It is also frequently incorporated into multi-herb formulas for conditions such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression.
